Explore the Beaches of Playa del Carmen and Cozumel

One Destination, Many Vibes: Finding Your Perfect Beach in Playa del Carmen

When you plan a trip to the Riviera Maya, the best part isn’t just the white sand and turquoise water—it’s the variety. You don’t have to choose just one “type” of vacation here.

One day you might want the electric energy of a beach club, the next you might crave a quiet jungle hideaway, and the day after that, a world-class snorkeling adventure. The beauty of staying in Playa del Carmen is that you have the entire spectrum right at your doorstep.

Here is a guide to the different “personalities” of our coast, so you can match the beach to your mood.

👑 The Crown Jewel: Mamitas Beach

The Vibe: High Energy, Music, and Style

If Playa del Carmen had a heartbeat, it would be Mamitas Beach. Located at the end of Calle 28, this isn’t just a strip of sand; it is an institution.

Here is why Mamitas is the go-to for the “See and Be Seen” crowd:

  • The Scene: Mamitas is the epicenter of cool. It’s where international DJs spin lounge music, where the fashion set comes to tan, and where the energy is electric.
  • The Beach Clubs: You have two titans right next to each other. Mamita’s Beach Club is the classic—massive and famous. Next door is Coralina Daylight Club, which is pure “Vegas meets Tulum” with champagne showers and high-energy house music.
  • The Convenience: It is just steps from the best condos in the city (like Aldea Thai) and a two-minute walk from 5th Avenue. You can grab your towel, walk out your door, and be in the middle of the action instantly.

🌴 Coco Beach (The North End)

The Vibe: Relaxed, Spacious, and “Jungle-Chic”

Just a short stroll north, past the hustle of Mamitas and starting around Calle 38, the energy shifts completely. This area, often referred to as Coco Beach, feels like a deep exhale.

  • The Jungle Feel: As you walk north, the dense urban feel fades away. The beach here is backed by lush greenery and trees that often spill out toward the sand, giving it a much more natural aesthetic.
  • The Experience: This is the perfect spot if you want to read a book, take a long walk, or watch the fishing boats bobbing in the water without the heavy bass of a beach club in the background.

🐾 The Dog Beach (Calle 72)

The Vibe: Pet-Friendly and Quiet

If you keep walking north past the CTM Avenue (Calle 46), you will eventually hit Calle 72. This is officially designated as a “Blue Flag” beach, but locals know it as the Dog Beach.

It is a bit of a walk from the center, but it’s worth it if you love animals. It’s quiet, clean, and one of the few places where you can watch the local dogs splashing in the waves. It’s a great spot to escape the tourist crowds without leaving the city.

💧 Punta Esmeralda (Calle 110)

The Vibe: Local, Authentic, and Hidden

Further north—about a 15-minute walk from the Dog Beach or a quick taxi ride—lies Punta Esmeralda.

  • Only the Locals Know: This is where the residents of Playa come to hang out. It has a completely different soul than the tourist center.
  • The Cenote Connection: The coolest feature here is a small, open cenote (freshwater sinkhole) that bubbles up right on the beach, creating a shallow, calm pool that flows into the ocean. It is pure magic and perfect for wading.

⛴️ The Cozumel Option

The Vibe: A Diver’s Dream and Island Adventure

We can’t talk about beaches without mentioning the island sitting right on our horizon. Cozumel is just a 40-minute ferry ride away, and it offers two completely different worlds:

The West Side (Facing Playa): This is the calm side. The water here is like a swimming pool—crystal clear and flat.

  • Snorkeling & Diving: This is world-famous territory. You can drift snorkel over shallow reefs filled with starfish and stingrays, or dive the legendary Cozumel walls. Beach clubs here are plentiful and perfect for families.

The East Side (The Wild Side): If you rent a jeep and drive to the other side of the island, you’ll find a raw, untouched paradise.

  • The Scenery: There is no electricity and very few buildings. It is just miles of stunning, crashing waves and rocky outcroppings.
  • The Stop: Places like Chen Rio offer a protected cove where you can actually swim, but mostly, this side is about grabbing a fresh coconut, feeling the ocean breeze, and enjoying the view.

The Verdict? You don’t have to pick just one. Stay in town, enjoy the party at Mamitas on Friday, recover in the quiet sands of Coco Beach on Saturday, and hop the ferry for a snorkeling adventure in Cozumel on Sunday. That is the luxury of Playa del Carmen.
