5 Incredible Things to Do for Free

It is easy to spend money in the Riviera Maya. Between the eco-parks, the catamaran tours, and the world-class dining, your wallet can get a workout.

But here is a secret: some of the best experiences in Playa del Carmen don’t cost a single peso. Whether you are saving up for a big night out or just want to experience the authentic side of the city, here are my top 5 free things to do.

1. Catch the “Voladores de Papantla” at Parque Fundadores

Location: The south end of 5th Avenue, under the Portal Maya statue.

This is the cultural heart of Playa del Carmen. Right beneath the iconic Portal Maya (the giant bronze archway of two figures touching hands), you can witness an ancient Mesoamerican tradition.

The Voladores de Papantla (Flying Men) climb a 30-meter pole and launch themselves off, spinning upside down toward the ground while one plays a flute and drum at the top. It is breathtaking, a little terrifying, and completely free to watch.

  • Note: They do pass a hat around for tips afterward, and they definitely earn it!

2. Sunrise on the Caribbean

Location: Any beach, but near Calle 38 or Mamitas is spectacular.

The sun rises right over the ocean here, and trust me, it is the best show in town. The colors—pinks, purples, and fiery oranges—reflecting off the calm morning water are unreal.

Grab a coffee from Ah Cacao Chocolate Café (or brew one in your condo), head down to the sand around 6:30 AM, and watch the world wake up. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it’s the perfect start to the day.

3. The “Local’s Spa” at Punta Esmeralda

Location: Calle 110 (North end of town).

I’ve mentioned this beach before, but it deserves a spot on this list because it is a completely unique—and free—natural attraction.

At Punta Esmeralda, a freshwater cenote bubbles up right on the sand, creating a shallow, cool pool that mixes with the warm ocean water. It’s like a natural spa day. Families bring picnics, kids splash in the calm water, and you get to enjoy a cenote experience without paying an entrance fee.

4. A Self-Guided Street Art Walk

Location: Just wander off 5th Avenue (especially 10th and 30th Avenues).

Playa del Carmen is an open-air gallery. If you step just one or two blocks off the touristy 5th Avenue, you will find incredible murals painted by world-renowned street artists.

Head down Calle 26 or explore the walls along 30th Avenue. The colors are vibrant, the subjects range from Mayan mythology to modern marine life, and it makes for fantastic photography. It’s an urban treasure hunt that costs nothing.

5. The Hidden Ruins of Xaman-Ha (Playacar)

Location: Inside the Playacar gated community (South end of town).

You don’t have to pay for an expensive tour to Chichén Itzá to see ancient history. Right here in town, hidden within the lush greenery of the Playacar residential area, are the Xaman-Ha Ruins.

You can walk into Playacar Phase 1 (just south of the ferry terminal) freely. As you stroll the quiet, tree-lined streets, you’ll stumble upon these ancient stone structures.

  • The History: This was once the departure point for Mayans making the sacred pilgrimage to Cozumel to worship Ixchel, the Jaguar Goddess.

  • The Wildlife: This area is teeming with wildlife. It is almost guaranteed that you will spot families of Agoutis (cute, rabbit-like rodents) and massive Iguanas sunning themselves on the ancient stones. It is a peaceful, historical walk that most tourists completely miss.
